What Previous Students Think About Alicante

About Alicante

Sun, Spanish language and a Mediterranean lifestyle. Does this sound attractive to you? Alicante is a colourful coastal city and one of the oldest ports on the Spanish Mediterranean. This destination is highly recommended for students who want to combine a few weeks or months of Spanish language and culture with outdoor cafés, beaches and nightlife.

Because the city is a popular destination for both Spanish and foreign holidaymakers, Alicante has its own airport. Alicante is by no means all about package tourism, however. It offers plenty of culture and Old World charm, easily discovered in the narrow streets of the historic district surrounding the St. Nicholas Cathedral. Students can enjoy sipping coffee on the leafy beachfront esplanade, take a tram to the grand castle of Santa Bárbara and discover the secret legend of Mount Benacatil. In the summer, Alicante offers some of Spain’s best beaches and paellas—and a lively nightlife scene for students, locals and visitors.

Some locals in Alicante speak a language called Valenciano alongside Spanish; this can make it harder to get to know a part of the population, especially during longer stays when students usually want to interact more with the people in the area. Staying in Alicante from 2 weeks to 3-4 months, or combining it with another immersion destination, is ideal. Suggested cities that combine well with Alicante are Salamanca and Granada, which offer a completely different cultural perspective, and have cheap living costs.

Weather-wise, Alicante is a year-round destination. Average temperatures in winter are about 16ºC (60ºF) and in summer 32ºC (90ºF). Summers can get very hot in July and August, and during those months the weather can feel sticky due to high humidity. In Alicante, you can usually sunbathe from early May all the way to late October, but the winter months are also great for being outdoors.

Alicante, just like the rest of Spain, celebrates many fairs and festivals. These are often accompanied by parades, fireworks, music and typical local food, and they go on until the early hours of the morning. For example, on the night of San Juan a huge fiesta is celebrated to welcome the summer. Bonfires with huge papier mache figures are set up on the beach on 20th June and then burned on the 23rd June. An impressive fireworks display, which can be seen from everywhere in Alicante, is set off from the Santa Bárbara Castle that night.

Living costs in Alicante are not as cheap as those in inland university cities like Salamanca and Granada, but at the same time, Alicante is not as expensive as Spain’s two biggest cities, Madrid and Barcelona. Summertime peak season sees a rise in accommodation prices and eating out, but during the rest of the year prices fall back down. Students can enjoy living in Alicante on a modest to average budget by avoiding tourist areas, and shopping and eating in places used by the locals.

Recommendations

Alicante is recommended to people who like a typical Spanish and Mediterranean atmosphere and climate. Alicante is a popular tourist destination and there are always a lot of both Spanish and foreign visitors.

Most people in Alicante speak Spanish but there are still some people that prefer speaking Valenciano, which can make it difficult to get to know part of the population. Everyone speaks Spanish, however, since it's the official language.

Alicante is big enough to offer interesting cultural / spare time activities but for a long-term Spanish study it might be interesting to combine Alicante with another destination.
