About the Mature Student Spanish Courses

Traditionally, Spanish language courses have been aimed at high school and university students between 18-26 years old, who made up approx. 50-80% of all spaces at the different schools. Today this has changed and many private schools have created special courses for different groups such as professionals, youngsters under 18, language as a hobby and of course the 3rd age courses. The last group is becoming more important mainly because the 3rd age generation today has a better acquisition power and have began to travel more.

The mature student courses are arranged much like a standard Spanish course regarding to the methods of teaching Spanish. The main difference is the free time activities arranged which includes more social and cultural activities targeted directly to this group including Spanish cooking lessons, Flamenco dancing classes, visits to museums, etc.

The average class has around 10 students and between 15-20 classes per week, which allows the teacher to get the whole class involved. The 3-4 classes per day focus on grammar, vocabulary and understanding of the Spanish language and culture and are based on the active participation of all students.

For Whom are these Courses Best Suited

Although all general Spanish courses at private schools as well as public universities are open for mature students, many people within this group have feared ending up in a class with only 18-year-old students. Today this is not the case, as you normally can find students of all age groups in every school - apart from the summer courses where you find mainly young students.

We can therefore recommend the special mature student courses for people who prefer studying only with people of the same age. It can also be highly recommended for the many special free-time activities arranged which is the principle difference between this course and a standard course. Another reason why many people choose this course is that it is a very good way to meet new people and at the same time learn a new language and participate in many interesting activities.

The main problem however with these courses is that there are few starting dates available and normally a fixed number of weeks, which can make it difficult to find a course exactly when you have planned to visit Spain. If this is the case a standard course can be highly recommended as an alternative especially if you are opened minded and do not mind experiencing a new country on your own.
