What Previous Students Think About Madrid

About Madrid

Madrid is one of the most exciting cities in the world. It is highly recommended for both short- and long-term immersion courses, and suitable for students who want hundreds of activities and sights to choose from every day. There is always something happening in Madrid—from big concerts and international sporting events, to street markets, museum expositions and a buzzing nightlife scene. Madrid is a very cosmopolitan city with people from all over the world. It also holds a special charm: out of the thousands of international and Spanish students who move here to study, many end up living and working here.

Madrid is Spain's capital, and its size and scope reflect this. For students not used to a big, noisy city, Madrid can be daunting at first. Those who come from big cities themselves, however, will find Madrid’s pace surprisingly laid back. Madrid has the most square miles of park and green areas of any city in Europe. Although the rush hour traffic can be frenetic, there are plenty of beautiful plazas with relaxing café terraces where visitors can stop to enjoy a cup of coffee. A modern, safe and efficient public transport system including Metro trains and city buses connects Madrid’s unique city districts with each other.

The Prado Museum, the Reina Sofia modern art museum and the Thyssen Gallery are some of the main cultural attractions in the city. Whilst no student should miss these, Madrid is also jam-packed with many other sightseeing gems: Plaza Mayor with its medieval market, the Royal Castle where visitors can take an excellent guided tour and visit the Armoury Musuem, Puerta del Sol square, Cibeles fountain, Bernabeu football stadium or the Egyptian temple in the Parque del Oeste—not to mention the famous El Retiro park.

Madrid is also known for its culinary offering, from trendy fast food joints and great tapas restaurants, to typical taverns and international food of every kind. Madrid has every kind of nightlife venue, from cheap student bars to huge multi-story nightclubs. All music styles are represented on Madrid’s varied nightlife scene, whether visitors are looking for 80’s pop, niche jazz cafés, flamenco tablaos or ultra-fashionable electro.

June to August in Madrid gets very hot, with average temperatures around 40º C (105º F), both day and night. In mid-winter the weather can drop all the way down to zero—while it’s rare for snow to fall in Madrid, this has been known to happen. Students who bring appropriate clothing for each season can visit Madrid any time of year, but spring and autumn are the most pleasant times to visit. Either way, Madrid enjoys more than 2000 hours of sunshine per year, and this is often the case on cold winter days too.

Madrid is an expensive city. Accommodation can be particularly dear. Sightseeing, eating and nightlife in the tourist areas of the centre is not advisable for students on tight budgets. Students on a tight budget are advised to share accommodation, buy discount travel cards, eat and drink in cheaper student venues or establishments where locals go, or shop for their food in supermarkets. This will allow a student to live in Madrid on an average budget, even for a longer period of time.

The above factors make Madrid an ideal Spanish immersion destination, whether students wish to book a two-week course or stay a full university year. If the city’s prices get too expensive, a short stay in Madrid can also be combined with cheaper and smaller destinations. Malaga, Granada, Seville and Cadiz in the south of Spain provide an excellent cultural contrast and considerable savings.

Recommendations

People who like a big city atmosphere will love Madrid. In Madrid. There's always something happening here: from big concerts to international sporting events, street parades, museum expositions and great nightlife. Additionally, Madrid is a very cosmopolitan city with people from all over the world and thousands of students who come here to study each year. As Spain's capital, Madrid is not like other Spanish towns and can be a bit intimidating for students who are not used to a big (and noisy) city. Although this might be the first impression, visitors normally change their minds about the city after having experienced the nightlife and once they get to know the city and its people better. Before planning your trip to Madrid we recommend you take into consideration that from June to August the average temperature is about 40º C (105º F).
