What Previous Students Think About Malaga

About Malaga

Malaga is a vibrant Mediterranean port city with lots of sun and friendly people. This destination is recommended for students who like to combine plenty of Spanish culture and history with sunny beaches, eating out and nightlife. Because of Malaga’s great weather and extensive offering of free-time activities, it is an ideal destination for both short 2-6 week courses, as well as immersion experiences lasting between two months and a whole year.

Malaga is not a big city. It is sufficiently large, however, to offer a busy cultural agenda and many modern city conveniences: shopping centres, sports grounds, international concerts, cinemas and classical music and theatre. There is a good public transport system, which includes buses, commuter trains and a city bicycle rental service.

The historic city centre of Malaga is full of narrow, cobbled streets, great tapas bars and old buildings with wrought-iron balconies. This area has been refurbished to a high standard by the town hall and offers many top attractions and monuments. Amongst them are the Roman Theatre, the grand Gibralfaro castle, Picasso Museum and Picasso’s birth home, and the city’s impressive cathedral. Malaga has a total of 28 museums, including the Modern Art Centre, Interactive Music Museum, Thyssen Museum, Maritime Museum, Wine Museum, Glass Museum, Automobile Museum and many others. The centre also has many small shops, as well as high street stores. A short walk away from the historic centre is a huge El Corte Inglés department store and three city shopping centres, one of which has a multiplex cinema.

Malaga has a great culinary offering and nightlife, both very cheap. There are great tapas bars, cafés and fish restaurants in the centre, as well as in the seaside neighbourhoods. Malaga is known for its many fun bars, nightclubs and live music venues. Nights out in Malaga go on until the early hours of the morning. On the other hand, Malaga also offers a paradise for sunbathers in the summer; the city boasts long beaches and pleasant seaside promenades. There are also many beach bars and restaurants that get busy through June to September. These are found in the old fishing districts of El Palo and Pedregalejo. Malaga’s city beaches are not full of tourists and are almost exclusively frequented by people who live in the city.

Malaga’s locals speak Spanish with an Andalusian accent. It is known for its soft tones and the fact that consonants are often dropped from the ends of sentences. This means that some students may find the Spanish spoken in Malaga somewhat more difficult to understand than the clear Castilian Spanish spoken in Madrid. It quickly becomes easier, however, when students learn to tune into the sounds. Malaga’s population is very friendly and open, and have a great sense of humour. For this reason, students will find practicing Spanish in the city easy and encouraging.

Weather in Malaga is very sunny. During the whole year, there are more than 300 days of sunshine. Although mid-winter can be rainy and cool with sea winds adding an extra chill factor, spring and autumn in Malaga are warm and pleasant. Mid-summer in Malaga is very hot, however, so students who dislike intense heat and sunshine should avoid July and August.

This destination is one of Spain’s cheapest, and therefore ideal for students who want to stick to a low budget. Accommodation prices in Malaga are fairly low and the public transport system is much cheaper than in bigger Spanish cities. Eating out, shopping and nightlife are where students will really notice the low prices in Malaga.

Recommendations

Malaga is the perfect location if you like the sea, the beach and a very comfortable year round temperature. The town and the small villages around Malaga provide a classic Mediterranean atmosphere with its friendly and open people. Although it is not a big city, Malaga is still large enough to offer all the conveniences of a larger city such as shopping malls, sports facilities, international concerts, etc.
