  • The School
Learn English in Instituto Mediterráneo Sol

Instituto Mediterraneo Sol (IMS) is a good choice, if you are looking for a solid, academic Spanish language program in a fascinating Andalusian city steeped in culture and history. As a school, IMS offers over 20 years of experience in Spanish language tuition to foreign students, and is perfectly located in the central El Realejo quarter of Granada, not far from the Alhambra castle.

Accredited by the Cervantes Institute, Instituto Mediterraneo Sol provides students with the highest possible Spanish quality assurance. IMS has five classrooms with audio-visual equipment, and the school has free WiFi and computers for student use, plus a book and video library with a loan service. The school’s teachers are all native Spanish speakers, who hold both a linguistics degree, as well as a CAP teaching certificate, and have plenty of relevant experience. The 45-minute lessons are carried out entirely in Spanish from day one, whether you are a beginner or a more advanced student – this mean that you will be immersed in Spanish straight away. The school places great importance on the four cornerstones of language learning: speaking, listening, reading and writing. Each course covers these four main aspects, as well as grammar, pronunciation, verbal communication practice and vocabulary.

There are three different intensive courses available: “Intensive I” offering 20 weekly lessons, “Intensive II” that includes 25 weekly lessons, and “Super Intensive” with 30 weekly lessons. Taught in groups of maximum 8 students, the school assesses each student before they start their course. Students are then placed in groups according to their level, but there is a flexible policy towards placement; on Mondays and Tuesdays, students can move to a higher or lower level course, if both they and the school feel they would benefit from it. There are several specialist courses, including DELE Preparation, Hispanic Studies, Grammar Courses, Tourism and Medical Spanish, and Spanish with Guitar, Flamenco, Horse Riding or Skiing. The school also organises age-relevant Spanish courses for Mature Students, as well as Teenagers’ Courses. More information about the specialist programs is available through UniSpain.

While some schools have a registration fee, IMS does not charge anything above and beyond its course fees, and students can borrow all the relevant study materials and books for free. These factors are an advantage to those travelling on a budget, added to the fact that Granada is one of Spain’s cheaper destinations.

After the classes, the school provides additional, free Spanish language workshops in the form of debates and tutorials on literature, history and current affairs topics, as well as conversation practice for real life situations. Every Monday the school organises a free, guided tour of Granada, allowing especially new students to get a feel for the historic city centre and all the main sights. Apart from these free activities, the students can also opt to join paid-for weekly social and cultural events, like tapas tours, cooking workshops, international dinners and museum visits, including the Alhambra castle. Weekend excursions to nearby Andalusian cities of Cordoba and Sevilla, as well as the Sierra Nevada ski resort and the Costa Tropical beaches, are also regularly arranged.

The city of Granada is famous for its stunning Moorish architecture, winding cobblestone streets and charming, mysterious Old World vibe. At the same time, Granada offers a vibrant student social scene for those who seek it, thanks to Granada University’s presence. Dining and nightlife in the form of tapas restaurants, Flamenco tablao bars and Moorish teahouses are aplenty, and with the IMS student card, you will also enjoy discounts at some of the typical Moroccan and Spanish handicraft shops, and other establishments, nearby. Granada’s small international airport serves most of the main European airlines, and you can also travel to the city by train from Madrid, or by bus from Malaga.
