About Granada
Many students pick Granada because of its unique atmosphere. Granada is a university town, and against the historic backdrop of its ancient architecture, the city is surprisingly young and free-spirited. This destination is highly recommended to those students who want a big helping of Spanish culture and history, combined with great student bars and a lively tapas culture.
Granada’s main attraction is the magnificent Alhambra Castle and the adjacent Generalife gardens—described by poets as “a pearl set in emeralds”. A masterpiece of Moorish architecture, the Alhambra is also a UNESCO World Heritage site. Granada has several historic neighbourhoods, like Albayzín with its Arab bath complex and Granada’s archaeological museum, as well as Sacromonte with its whitewashed cave dwellings and flamenco bars. Apart from architecture and history, Granada’s centre also offers many hidden treasures: rocking student bars and nightclubs, great little restaurants, handicraft shops and Moorish tearooms. All of these are hidden in a quaint labyrinth of small streets and old buildings.
The people in Granada speak with an Andalusian accent, which often drops consonants from the ends of words. Some students find the accent difficult to understand at first and need some time to get used to it. However, the Andalusian accent spoken in the city of Granada is clearer than the Spanish spoken in the rest of the province. Additionally, 15% of Granada’s population consists of students, many of them from other parts of Spain. The locals in Granada are also known as open and friendly. These factors make Granada a great place for immersion students to get exposed to speaking Spanish every day. They also mean that there is a happening social scene in the city.
Granada’s average annual temperature is 14ºC (50ºF), but this can vary steeply from winter to summer. Mid-summer is very hot and dry with heat rising to 40ºC (104ºF). Due to the city’s altitude, however, winter weather is cold and temperatures can go all the way down to 0ºC (32ºF) in December and January. There can be heavy rain in November, March and April. Spring and autumn, when temperatures are mild to warm, and there is ample sunshine, are the most pleasant times to visit the city.
About a 30-minute drive from Granada is the Sierra Nevada National Park. Thanks to the cold winters, Sierra Nevada has a ski resort which opens from November to March. During the rest of the year the park’s many trekking, horse riding, mountain biking and climbing routes are available to outdoors enthusiasts. Many Granada language schools organise excursions to Sierra Nevada, both during the winter ski season, as well as to take part in other nature-related activities in spring, summer and autumn.
Because Granada offers so many sights and a busy student life, it is a great destination for both short stays, as well as longer courses of 6-12 months. Students staying for a longer period should pack clothing appropriately, to cope with both warm and cold weather.
Granada is a low-cost student destination. Because of the university’s presence student accommodation is very cheap and readily available in Granada. Living costs like groceries and public transport are some of the lowest in Spain. The city is also famous for its “free tapas” culture, where many restaurants give customers free portions of food with their drink.
